Community:

Merit are a value-based company focused on ethics, processes and people. We actively promote equal opportunities, sustainability, safety, and diversity throughout our business. At Merit we assume responsibility for the impact that our decisions and activities have on society and the environment through transparent and ethical behaviour. We are a team of principle-led individuals and our values underpin everything that we do, from our policies and procedures to the way in which we treat one another.

Our aim is to develop a progressive and value-centred organisation that meets the demands of an ever changing employment industry in an innovative and ethical manner. Merit’s ultimate goal is achieving sustained profit by providing exceptional service and continuous development. We appreciate that it is the talent and passion of people that makes a difference within any organisation and as such are dedicated to the on-going training of our team.

Equal Opportunities and Respecting Diversity:

We adhere to and embolden the spirit of all applicable employment laws and regulations to treat employees and others without prejudice. It is our policy to promote an environment free from discrimination, harassment, and victimisation where everyone will receive equal treatment irrespective of sex, gender, age, disability, race, ethnic or national origin, sexual orientation, marital or civil partnership status, religion or belief, political beliefs or membership or non-membership of a Trade Union.

Merit are committed to providing training for our entire staff in regards to equal opportunities practice and we will not act on an instruction from a client that is discriminatory. Where appropriate or as requested, we provide guidance to clients in respect of good diversity practice to safeguard against unlawful or unethical discrimination in the operation of their business.

Professional Know-How:

As a company we are passionate about fostering a continuous learning culture at every level, with the belief that employees should strive to do better whilst providing support and encouragement to their colleagues to do the same. As such, we deliver in-house training programmes for all employees to keep everyone up to date with current legal and industrial requirements, allowing us to identify opportunities for employees to increase their knowledge and further their careers.

A Safe Environment for Workers:

We assess risks in the workplace and will not knowingly put employees, clients or others at risk, informing parties whenever we have reason to believe that an engagement may raise a health & safety issue. This is achieved by completing risk assessments, producing health & safety policies, providing supervision and training, and by issuing booklets when required.

Respect for Confidentiality and Privacy:

We observe the highest principles of integrity, professionalism and fair practice to maintain the confidentiality and privacy of employee and client information. We recognise the importance of respecting the privacy of all our employees and the need for the appropriate safeguards in relation to the collection, storage and processing of personal data in accordance with legislation and good business practice.

Environment:

We believe that we all need to behave responsibly to protect and improve the environment and explore new ways in which we can minimise the impact we have on our surroundings, such as using locally-sourced, environmentally friendly products where possible.

A high volume of paper has traditionally been used in our industry and other professional organisations, and by questioning accepted practices we are aiming to significantly reduce our usage, ensuring that the paper we do expend has minimal impact on the environment.

We have introduced and developed an online timesheet system, ‘Msheet’, which our clients have access to, reducing the number of paper timesheets sent in and faxed. Increased use of email and online media rather than paper based communications for both general business correspondence and marketing activity has also had a positive effect.

On the waste that we do produce, we aim to minimise negative environmental effects by making every effort to recycle paper, cardboard, metal and plastic, for which staff make a voluntary contribution each month, ensuring confidential paper waste is shredded and recycled locally. In addition, all spent print toner containers are sent back to the suppler for recycling and any electronic waste is disposed of in line with the WEE Regulations.

Charity in the community:

At Merit we have always strived to make a positive contribution to the community in which we operate, and for the last 8 years we have organised and run a charity football tournament in support of Macmillan’s Cancer Relief. To date, we have raised over £25,000 to help support nurses, carers and those directly affected by cancer.

Sports in the community:

Merit plays an active role in its local sporting community, sponsoring a local power league team, Basingstoke Town Football Club and Basingstoke Town Rugby Football Club.

Recruitment & Employment Confederation (REC):

As members of the REC, company employees adhere to and comply with the REC Code of Practice.  The Code has been created to ensure that members of the REC conduct their business ethically and to the highest standards as well as promoting good practice. For us, ethical conduct is not simply compliance with legal requirements, but extends to honesty, the respect and equitable treatment of others, integrity, and social responsibility.
